So I dried off and started prototyping: the next day I had the world’s first Twitter client running on my Mac.Ī few days later, I checked all my code into our repository and Twitterrific was born: While taking a shower in the middle of December, an idea struck me: it wouldn’t be hard to hook up Twitter’s new API to the Cocoa networking classes and display a table with tweets. Like John Gruber and my colleagues at the Iconfactory, I loved our new “water cooler for the Internet.” I was, however, unhappy with using Twitter via the website or Dashboard widgets. I started started using Twitter at the beginning of December. We thought the best way to react to all this positive activity would be to keep on making improvements. Last month, the number of Twitter users doubled and it looks like it's going to double again before we run out of December. Things are really heating up at Twitter headquarters these days. It’s not everyday that a word you helped create gets added to this prestigious publication, so I thought I’d share a bit of the early history of the word “tweet.” This breaks at least one OED rule, namely that a new word needs to be current for ten years before consideration for inclusion. The noun and verb tweet (in the social-networking sense) has just been added to the OED. On October 10, 2017, the Mac application received a 5.0 update and was added to the Mac App Store. On February 14, 2017, a Kickstarter project was launched by The Iconfactory to try and revive the Twitterrific for Mac application. On June 24, a version of Twitterrific was launched (version 3.0) that was universally compatible with the iPhone, iPod touch and the iPad. On April 1, 2010, The Iconfactory released Twitterrific for iPad (Version 1.0), ready for the iPad's US launch on April 3. The iOS version of Twitterrific won the 2008 Apple Design Award for Best iPhone Social Networking Application.

Other changes in version 3 mostly added compatibility with Mac OS X 10.5 and incorporated newer Twitter features like direct messaging. Users who buy the program receive no ads. Version 3 changed Twitterrific into advertising supported shareware every hour an ad is refreshed to the top of the list. History Īs of version 2.1, Twitterrific supports Growl notifications, enhanced AppleScript capabilities and can be used with other sites or services that use the Twitter API. Twitterrific also provides functionality to upload images and videos for posting on Twitter. Users can also click on links to view the poster's profile or mark a tweet as a favorite.

Users may choose to view the full public timeline or just the friends feed. The program's main window uses a translucent black theme similar to certain palettes used in Aperture, iPhoto and other Apple Inc. It lets users view "tweets" or micro-blog posts on the Twitter website in real time as well as publish their own. Twitterrific was a macOS and iOS client for the social networking site Twitter created by The Iconfactory and was the first Twitter desktop client to come to macOS.
